When you disassemble a technological object, you generally find a series of small elements assembled together. Looking closely at each of these fragments of machine, one can detect on their surface the discreet presence of a multitude of alphanumeric inscriptions. Serial numbers, industrial standards, assembly instructions or even technical references, the digital objects that surround us are covered with incomprehensible texts. What meaning can we give to these obscure inscriptions?
We have developed a future prediction protocol that uses Yì Jīng (a traditional Chinese mode of divination) to imagine the future of our techno-planet from reading the inscriptions hidden inside our digital machines. As part of this protocol, the inscriptions found during the dismantling of a technical object are translated using a computer program into binary code, then into the Yì Jīng hexagram. A "table of correspondences" then allows us to answer, from each of the hexagrams obtained, the questions that are put to us.
This divination operation can be presented in the form of an installation or it can be performed in front of an audience.
